SAFETY CAMERA PARTNERSHIP FOR HAMPSHIRE AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT
1. The Authority has received an update report from the Chief Constable setting out the current situation regarding the Safety Camera Partnership and detailing progress made since 1 April, 2002.
2. The Authority supports the Chief Constable in his efforts to supply the media with positive information about the Partnership and its intentions in order to reassure the public that the primary motivation behind the project is to improve road safety and reduce casualties. Members have also supported the additional mobile camera routes as their presence on the road reminds the public that speed limits apply at all locations and not only in the proximity of fixed cameras. In this respect, it was noted that the Partnership website, launched in January, 2003, provides information about the routes and sites and these would also be published in local papers.
3. The Chief Constable also informed the Authority that, following a recent High Court Judgement, individual police forces are now responsible for determining the level of visibility of each fixed camera site and, accordingly, he would be seeking the advice of his Head of Traffic before making a decision on each individual camera in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
