REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE MEMBER

RECREATION AND HERITAGE

PART II

CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS IN HAMPSHIRE

1. Creative partnerships is a government initiative established to support work which enables young people and their teachers to work with professionals from the creative industries to develop creative and cultural capacity in the next generation by using the arts to support schools' curricula. Funding is currently targeted at areas of deprivation and work both in and out of school is supported. Hampshire County Council has approached the scheme management to express its determination to be involved as one of the creative partnership authorities and the local scheme will be known as Creative Hampshire. The role of the organisation will, inter alia, entail the setting up and funding of relevant projects, the provision of information about work of this nature for schools and other youth bodies and the provision of a meeting point for education service initiatives and recreation and heritage department resources.

2. The Executive Member has approved funding totalling £50,000 for projects involving the Anvil Theatre at Basingstoke, two projects organised by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Arts in Schools. The scheme at the Anvil is a community music theatre involving 300 people and a professional creative team whilst the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra projects entail the provision of an extra 178 workshops with young people across the County and the holding of concerts in 50 schools with the music being played by 4 or 5 artists. Arts in Schools is a touring drama master class for teachers and children throughout the county.

3. Further funding totalling £74,000 has been approved in principle for other projects such as Art Asia activities, arts in country parks and a Welsh National Opera project; delegated authority has been given to the Director of Recreation and Heritage for the final decision on each project.
