DISABILITY SPORTS OFFICER

1. The Executive Member has approved the appointment of a full-time disability sports development officer for Hampshire whose role will be to improve the delivery of advice and support to disability sport in the County in order that more people may participate. In recent years officers have been appointed on a temporary basis using a funding package provided by the English Federation of Disability Sport and the County Council, such a package made it difficult to plan for the work beyond 12 months and also created an unsatisfactory situation for the postholder by dint of being only temporary in nature.

2. Examples of the work undertaken by the disability sports development officer are the delivery of training in disability sport to teachers, the setting up of disability football sessions with Southampton and Portsmouth Football Clubs, the organisation of visits by disadvantaged groups to Calshot and involvement in the establishment of the parallel games to which 18 special schools are already signed up to participate in 2003. Such activities accord with County Council objectives for school aged pupils.
