Hampshire County Council Item 2
Executive Member - Education
22 May 2003
To consider the results of the consultations based on the governors' recommendation to close the sixth form at Horndean Technology College
Report of the County Education Officer
Contact: Bob Lloyd-Jones, ext 6364
1. Summary
1.1 That the request of the governing body be accepted and, further to Section 28 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, proposals be published that there should be no sixth form provision at Horndean Technology College after July 2005, with no new admissions from 1 September 2004.
2. Reason
2.1 The sixth form is becoming increasingly unviable and the County Council cannot direct the governing body to subsidise the cost.
2.2 Following consultations with staff and parents, the arguments for and against closure have been clearly recorded in the attached paper which has been considered by the Education Policy Review Committee.
3. Other options considered and rejected
3.1 The governors have made a recommendation which is to close the sixth form. The only other option available would be to retain the sixth form by subsidising it from money in the college's 11-16 budget.
4. Conflictions of interest declared by the decision maker or a member or officer consulted
4.1 None.
5. Dispensation granted by the Standards Committee
5.1 Not applicable.
6. Reasons for the matter being dealt with if urgent
6.1 Not applicable.
