Personal Development Grants

1. Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. in accordance with the following details:-

1.1. Nicola Deverill, Andover

Nicola is 14 and has been chosen to take part in the UK Scouts Lukotaime in Uganda in August this year. She will help to provide basic sanitation to the local people and build a village school. Nicola needs to raise another £425 towards her total cost of £1,600 which will include travel, accommodation, equipment, etc.

Recommendation: £150

1.2. Abigail Barber, Lower Farringdon

Abigail is in her third year at Manchester University studying English and Drama. During the summer she has volunteered to support the work of the Andy Cole Children's Foundation to help with their project work in Zambia (originally set up to help children suffering with HIV/Aids in Southern Africa). During the six week trip, she will help to build a community school in the Siavonga district, which will provide free education to local villages.

Total cost of the trip is £1,500 which includes travel and accommodation. Abigail has already raised £750 towards these costs.

1.3. Lucy McGuiness, Chandlers Ford

Lucy McGuiness (15) is taking part in an International Guide Camp in Belarus in July this year where guides will come together and discuss guiding issues. The camp will also have an environmental theme and deal with ecological problems such as street cleaning, and give her the opportunity to learn about different cultures. Total cost of trip: £700.

1.4. Alexandra Booth, Cowplain

Alexandra (19) is involved in a Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) project in July this year to gain experience for her Disaster Management Degree. The placement runs for one year in Cambodia/Maldives at a total cost of £8,000, where she will work in the Mahibadhoo Atoll Hospital providing care for the sick and health education activities for the people of the Maldives. VSO will contribute £7,000 and Alexandra has to raise the remaining £1,000. She has managed so far to raise £250 with other fundraising events being planned.

1.5. Abbie Edwards, Marchwood

Abbie (13) is taking part in an International Guide Camp in Belarus in July this year where guides will come together and discuss guiding issues. 1.6. Jennifer Clow, Waterlooville

Jennifer has been chosen to take part in a Raleigh International Expedition to Ghana in October this year for two months. She will work to provide improved sanitation facilities to the people of northern Ghana and needs to raise £3,585 for this. Jennifer has raised almost £1,000.

1.7. Deborah Cannon, Cove

Deborah is taking part in a Summer Planet Teams African Inland Mission Project in Kenya as part of her degree in Theology at London Bible College. She will work with a local church teaching young people the basics of Swahili. Total cost £1,500. She plans to make mission and intercultural studies a major aspect of her degree. Deborah has raised £1,100 and requests a grant of £300.
