Hampshire County Youth Work Curriculum

Report of the County Education Officer

    Item

Contact: Sue Cooper, Youth Service Manager, Tel: 01962 846250

    1. Summary

1.1 The Hampshire County Youth Service Youth Work Curriculum document (appendix 1) sets out the framework for developing the curriculum in Hampshire. The document has been drafted in response to the Government's agenda for Transforming Youth Work which expects each Local Authority to have a clear curriculum statement.

    2. Background

2.1 The proposed document replaces the 1993 Youth Work Policy and Curriculum document and sits alongside the Hampshire County Youth Service Strategic Development Plan 2003 - 2006.

2.2 The proposed document has been influenced by the recent government report Transforming Youth Work - Resourcing Excellent Youth Services and the National Youth Agency publication, `Towards a contemporary curriculum for youth work'. It is acknowledged it is not appropriate to have a national curriculum for youth work but the government report Transforming Youth Work - Resourcing Excellent Youth gives clear guidelines for what constitutes a curriculum framework for an excellent youth service.

    3. Young People's involvement

3.1 Young people's views are at the core of this document. Consultation exercises took place in a range of venues which enabled young people to identify the place of youth work in their lives. Using a variety of methods young peoples' views were gathered on the component parts of content, teaching and assessment.

    4 Next steps

      · The document will be published and sent out to all youth projects.

      · The document will be produced electronically and available on the intranet, developing it as a resource with links to youth -specific information websites

      · The Intranet site will be enhanced to include pages on needs assessment, planning, reviewing and assessment transforming the curriculum framework into a comprehensive tool for delivery.

      · A reporting section will be added to enable young people and youth workers to share good practice which will provide a wide range of curriculum resources to others.
