Introduction

1.1

Shakespeare Junior School is situated in a residential area of Eastleigh and there are 356 pupils on roll.

1.2

At present there are two double temporary classroom units on site used as teaching accommodation. The purpose of this scheme is to provide permanent classrooms to facilitate the removal of the temporary classrooms from site.

1.3

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has developed a feasibility study which combines all elements of the work and the purpose of this report is to outline the proposals to Members and seek approval to the attached building feasibility project appraisal at an estimated cost of up to £348,000, excluding fees.

Scope of the Works

2.1

It is proposed to construct a single storey extension, providing two. classrooms and an additional room for the delivery of the numeracy and literacy strategies, with disabled access via low gradient ramps around the perimeter of the building.

Funding and Timing

3.1

Funding of £254,000, excluding fees, has been allocated in the Education Committee's 2003/04 Capital Programme and the School is contributing £81,000, excluding fees. The shortfall in funding will be addressed following receipt of tenders.

3.2

It is anticipated that tenders will be invited during July 2003 and works will commence on site during September 2003 and be completed during February 2004.

Conclusion

This scheme will provide permanent classroom accommodation and facilitate the removal of temporary buildings from site.
