PETERSFIELD TOWN CENTRE: TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER FOR 20 MILES PER HOUR ZONE AND ROAD HUMP REGULATIONS - HYLTON ROAD
1. As part of the Petersfield Area Transport Strategy (PATS) a number of highway, traffic calming and environmental improvement schemes for Petersfield town centre have been completed and the formal opening is scheduled for Tuesday, 23 September 2003. In order to support the completion of these improvements, a decision was taken on 23 July 2003 to introduce a 20 miles per hour (mph) zone under the Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the construction of road humps in Hylton Road.
2. The introduction of a 20 mph zone is consistent with the historic core of the town and is complementary with one of the aims of the Petersfield Area Transport Strategy of improving conditions for cyclists and pedestrians alike in the town centre. In addition, the traffic calming measures in Hylton Road are expected to reduce traffic speeds to levels consistent with the 20 mph zone. A public exhibition has been held, the outcome of which indicated a high level of support for both schemes.
3. To assist motorists and raise awareness of the new 20 mph zone, traffic signs and coloured surface treatments will be used at the entry points to the zone.
