Bridge Works Programme 2003/04 - New Forest

Redbridge Rail Bridge, Totton

This bridge carries the A35 Totton Bypass over the main Southampton/ Bournemouth railway line. The parapets were damaged in a road traffic accident and the site is at present protected by temporary concrete barriers. Details of permanent repairs and protective measures are being investigated as part of an overall strategy for improvements to the cycle route alongside the A35 Totton Bypass.

Painting Contract

Several bridges are being painted by the contactor South Coast Coatings of Southampton. These include Brockenhurst Mill bridge; Lanes bridge, Netley Marsh and Knowles bridge, Fordingbridge. Work started in August and is due for completion in October 2003.

Red Open Ford Bridge, Emery Down

This bridge carries the C17, Emery Down to Minstead road, over Mill stream. Its load carrying capacity has been assessed as substandard. A new bridge, similar in appearance to the existing, has been designed and will be built by RCS. The work will start in September and is due for completion in December 2003. It will necessitate the closure of the C17 and a signed diversion, agreed with the police and New Forest District Council, will be in place.
