Summary |

1.1 |
Long Sutton Primary School is located in a rural setting in Hyde Road, Long Sutton, Basingstoke. There are 121 pupils (4-11 years) currently on roll. The main school building was erected in 1910 with kitchen, staff room hall and toilet extensions being added in the 1990's. |

The total cost of this scheme to replace a temporary building in very poor condition, provide two new classrooms and enable one existing classroom to be available for specialist teaching is £438,000, excluding fees. An allocation of £345,000, excluding fees, has been made in the Education Committee's Capital Programme (Modernisation) for 2003/04, The school is contributing £93,000, excluding fees. |

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal. |

2. |
Scope of the Works |
|

2.1 |
It is proposed to construct two new teaching areas, a new tutorial room and an extension to an existing teaching area to provide an enlarged reception class area with associated wc facilities. In addition, internal alterations will be made to the existing school to provide improved library/resource facilities, staff accommodation and reception/office space. |

2.2 |
Landscaping proposals include the demolition of an existing temporary classroom, making good the site to form an extension to the existing hard play area. The existing entrance gate to the school will be relocated and an access ramp constructed to provide more accessible entry to the main school entrance. A second entrance gate will be relocated to the west and a hard path will be formed along the western boundary of the school. The land between the school and the road will be landscaped to provide external areas for the relocated reception area and the adjacent existing classrooms. An existing hedge to the road boundary will be reinforced to make the external area secure. |

Funding and Timing |

3.1 |
An allocation of £345,000, excluding fees, has been made in the Education Committee's Capital Programme (Modernisation) for 2003/04. The school is contributing £93,000, excluding fees. |
3.2 |
Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during January 2004, work will commence on site during March 2004 and be completed during August 2004. |

This scheme involves classroom extensions and internal alterations to provide the necessary permanent accommodation and improved facilities required by the school, whilst facilitating the removal of one temporary classroom currently on site. Approval is accordingly sought to the attached building design project appraisal. |
