Summary |

1.1 |
Wildern Secondary School is a large comprehensive school that plays an important part in the surrounding community. It has been placed on the Government's list of "most improved schools" as a result of academic accomplishment and has received a DfES School Achievement Award. The school is located at Wildern Lane, Hedge End, Southampton and at present there are 1,656 pupils (11-16 years) on roll. |

It is proposed to construct a new learner pool at the school as a second phase of the new sports development facilities due to commence on site this autumn, thus extending and enhancing the current sports facilities. The proposed learner pool will adjoin the east side of the main swimming pool. The cost of the scheme is £676,000, excluding fees. The new facilities are being funded by Eastleigh Borough Council and will benefit both the community and the school. |

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal. |

Scope of the Works |

2.1 |
The proposed scheme will provide a 900mm deep learner pool of 64m², four family size changing cubicles and associated showers, separate accessible changing and showering area, toilets and storage areas. A new spectator area will also be provided together with dedicated plant for the new pool. |

2.2 |
Landscaping for this scheme will be carried out in conjunction with the main sports development, to consist of hard paved external areas, a grassed area and new trees. |

Funding and Timing |

The scheme will be wholly funded by Eastleigh Borough Council. |
3.2 |
The contractors, HBG, are currently on site with Basic Need works and it is recommended that this contract is negotiated with them on a develop and construct basis. Eastleigh Borough Council have approved this procurement route and it is included in the procurement report to the next Buildings Land and Contract Panel meeting. |
3.3 |
It is anticipated that works will commence on site in November 2003, with completion of both the pool and new sports facilities in September 2004, ready for the new academic term. |
