1. Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. in accordance with the following details:-

1.1. James Robinson, Fleet

James is currently raising funds for a Raleigh International expedition to Costa Rica in February next year. There he will give unique opportunities to disadvantaged young people and provide vital community and environmental work in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Total cost: £2,300. James is requesting a grant of £500.

Recommendation: £150

1.2. Emily Feltham, Church Crookham

During her Gap year Emily will be travelling to Tanzania for seven months with World Challenge Expeditions. Whilst in Tanzania, Emily will be working as a teacher in a local school and will be helping poor and deprived children develop their English Language skills to enable them to have a better quality of life. Total cost: £3,000. Emily is currently working at a local nursery to help pay for the trip.

Recommendation: £150

1.3. Martin Freeman, Winchester

Martin, until July this year, attended Icknield School in Andover. For the last three years he has been working towards his Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award, which he has now almost completed and hopes to begin on his Silver Award shortly. Martin has since moved to Winchester and is finding it difficult paying transport costs to attend the Award Centre in Andover.

The Award Centre are asking whether payment could be made to themselves to cover Martin's taxi fares for the next six months, approximately £640. It is hoped that Martin will move back to Andover within the next six months.

In view of the uncertainty in the length of time the grant would be required, it may be appropriate to award a grant on the condition that if Martin moves to Andover within the next six months, then the balance of the grant be returned to the County Council.

Recommendation: £640 on the condition that the balance be returned to the County Council should Martin move back to Andover within the six month time period.
