Grateley Primary School, Andover

Summary

1.1

Grateley Primary School is located off the High Street, in Grateley, near Andover. The main school building is Listed and several extensions have been constructed over the past ten years. However, the school does not have a hall and currently uses an oversized classroom for this purpose. It is therefore proposed to build a new hall.

The total cost of the scheme is £419,000, excluding fees. Funding of £374,000, excluding fees, has been made available from Education's 2003/04 NDS Modernisation fund and the School is making a contribution of £45,000.

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal.

Scope of the Works

2.1

The proposed new hall (120m²) with associated store and kitchen servery will be located to the west of the existing school buildings, linked by a new lobby. The new hall has been positioned to avoid disturbing existing trees as they provide important enclosure to the site and effectively screen the new hall. The design of the new hall reflects the rural location of the school, resembling a barn with a hipped slate roof. It has been carefully designed to reduce the scale as much as possible to respect the adjacent extended school buildings.

2.2

Landscape works associated with the scheme include new landscaped planting beds constructed around the new access ramp. Where possible, existing shrubs and trees will be retained or re-used

Funding and Timing

3.1

Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during February 2004, work will commence on site during April 2004 and be completed during September 2004.

3.2

Funding of £374,000, excluding fees, has been made from Education's 2003/04 NDS Modernisation fund and the School is making a contribution of £45,000.

Recommendation

That the Executive Member for Education approves the design project appraisal for Grateley Primary School, Andover.
