Summary

1.1

Kings' School is a large comprehensive school with a current number on roll of 1,803 pupils (11-16 years). The school was constructed in 1958 and has been developed over the years with new accommodation to meet the growth in pupils attending the school.

1.2

At the October 2002 meeting of the Executive Member - Education, a Design Project Appraisal was approved for the construction of a new music and drama facility to meet current curriculum needs at this school. This scheme was completed in September 2003.

1.3

At the request of the school a scheme to construct a new block of accommodation to provide additional general teaching classrooms is proposed. Funding for these proposals of £702,000, excluding fees, will be met entirely by the school.

1.4

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal.

2.

Scope of the Works

2.1

It is proposed to construct a new single-storey classroom block comprising six general teaching classrooms. Dependent on availability of future funding, the school has requested that a further block of general teaching classrooms be considered as a second phase. Planning consent was given in December 2002, with permission to develop the project in two phases.

2.2

This phase of development will incorporate six new classrooms and ancillary/support areas comprising a plant room, staff office and toilets.

2.3

The proposed new building will be located close to the southern boundary of a discrete playing field area to the northwest of the school site.

3.

Funding and Timing

3.1

Funding of £702,000, excluding fees, will be met by the school.

3.2

Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited before the end of 2003 and work will commence on site in January/February 2004, with an anticipated completion during August 2004.

Recommendation

That the Buildings Land and Contract Panel advises the Executive Member for Policy and Resources that the design project appraisal be approved.
