Summary

1.1

Tower Hill Primary School is located in the densely populated estate north of Farnborough aerodrome. The main school building is Victorian and extensions were added in the 1970's and 80's. There are currently 218 pupils (4-11 years) on roll.

1.2

The total cost of the scheme is £482,000, excluding fees. An allocation of £442,000, excluding fees, has been made from Education's 2003/04 Capital Programme NDS Modernisation Fund, and the school is contributing £40,000.

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal.

Scope of the Works

2.1

It is proposed to construct a new two classroom extension to replace two existing double temporary classrooms. The extension will be located to the east of the main school building and continues the pitched roof gabled forms of existing buildings.

2.2

Landscaping associated with the scheme includes shrub planting around the car park area and redirection of an existing path around the new classrooms. A new secure play area will be formed and the site of the existing temporary classrooms will be reinstated and grassed to form a new play area.

Funding and Timing

3.1

An allocation of £442,000, excluding fees, has been made from Education's 2003/04 Capital Programme NDS Modernisation Fund, and the school is contributing £40,000.

3.2

Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during February 2004, work will commence on site during April 2004 and be completed during September 2004.

Recommendation

That the Buildings Land and Contracts Panel advises the Executive Member for Policy and Resources that the design project appraisal be approved.
