    How the conclusion in this report fits with the Corporate Strategy

    This scheme will impact on the delivery of all Corporate Aims, focusing most immediately on:

    Aim 1 - maximising life opportunities
    : the proposal to provide a classroom extension will have an immediate benefit for the school.

    Aim 5 - improving services: all users of the proposed new facilities will benefit from these proposals.

Summary

1.1

Liphook Infant School shares a site with Liphook CE(C) Junior School and is located in a residential area. The school buildings are a mix of traditional build and SCOLA. The main building was erected in 1968 and a two classroom extension was added in 2000. There are currently 237 children (age 4-7) on roll.

An allocation of £190,000, excluding fees, has been made in Education's 2004/05 Capital Programme for a scheme to construct a classroom extension to provide three form entry (3FE). The estimated cost of these works is £264,000, excluding fees, and the school is contributing the remaining £74,000, excluding fees.

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal.

Scope of the Works

2.1

It is proposed to construct a new classroom extension within an existing courtyard area to the southern elevation of the school. A new resource area will be located between the proposed new classroom and an existing link corridor adjacent the main hall. A new staff room extension will be constructed to the north of the existing school hall and a new link corridor to the east of the hall.

    Landscaping proposals include a new fence to the front of the school to screen the playground from on-road parking. The proposed new classroom will occupy space that is currently used by parents waiting for children at the end of the day. The proposals include redesigning the area around the classroom and the route that the parents take. This will include widening the footpath and creating an enlarged space for parents waiting and external play areas.

Funding and Timing

3.1

An allocation of £190,000, excluding fees, has been made in Education's 2004/05 Capital Programme and the school is contributing £74,000, excluding fees.

3.2

Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during January 2004, work will commence on site during April 2004 and be completed during August 2004.

Recommendation

That the Executive Member for Education approves the design project appraisal for Liphook Infant School.
