1 Summary

1.1 The Compact with the DfES has now been finalised by officers. The Executive Member is invited to formally sign the document for Hampshire County Council. It will then be returned to DfES for their signature.

2 Reason

2.1 The Compact was developed, for the first time, with the DfES in the Autumn Term 2003. It is a partnership agreement, where DfES and Hampshire County Council have set out what each will be doing to help progress common priorities. Education PRC considered the draft Compact document at their meeting in December, and supported the progress that had been made, and the principle of the partnership agreement.

2.2 DfES and Hampshire County Council are both required to formally sign the Compact agreement. The Executive Member for Education is asked to do this on behalf of the County Council.

2.3 This decision supports Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy (Maximising Life Opportunities) by strengthening the provision of education to the community of Hampshire.
