Hampshire Schools Hands Up Travel Survey Appendix iv

September 2003

Summary Results

As part of its programme of engaging with schools on travel issues, the County Council conducted the first ever Hampshire Schools Hands-up Travel Survey during September 2003, where staff and pupils were asked how they travelled to school that day, and also how they would like to travel, given the choice. A total of 226 schools participated in the survey.

Alongside providing an invaluable source of information on the way in which children travel to school to support delivery of the Local Transport Plan, the survey also aims to raise awareness amongst schools of the Hampshire School Travel Plan Initiative and the Safer Routes to Schools Programme. The survey will be carried out annually and it is hoped that in the future, all schools will take part.

Figures 4 shows how children (aged 4 to 18) currently travel to and from school split by type of school. It is notable that cycling to school remains constantly low relative to the other modes.

Figure 5 shows how children (aged 4 to 18) would like to travel split by type of school. It is apparent that many more children would like to cycle than currently do.

Figure 6 shows how children currently travel to school within each District Council area (aged 4 to 18). Walking is highest within Eastleigh and Gosport while travelling to school by car is most popular in Hart.
