Personal Development Grants

Report of the Chief Executive

1. Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. in accordance with the following details. These grants would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities.

1.1. Sharon Hall, Winchester

Sharon has been accepted to attend a Raleigh International project in Namibia between September and December of this year at a cost of £1,900. Once there, Sharon will be responsible for organising and running a project site in a remote area and managing a group of twelve international young people in a cross cultural environment to deliver a community project.

Sharon currently works in the County Council's Recreation and Heritage Department and has so far raised £260 towards her costs.

The County Council's policy is not to award grants to people who are in full-time employment and, therefore, a grant is not recommended.

      Recommendation: Nil

1.2. Jennifer Ings, Fordingbridge

Jennifer (15) has been selected to take part in the "Bijoux `04" International Guide Camp in St Vincent and the Grenadines in April this year, costing £700. The Camp will enable her to communicate better with different nationalities and backgrounds. Jennifer has managed to raise £500 towards her costs.

Recommendation: £150

1.3. Henry Winstanley, Owslebury

Henry is taking part in community and environmental projects with Raleigh International in Namibia this month for a period of ten weeks. The total cost of trip is £3,500, which covers, travel, accommodation, materials and tools, etc.

Henry graduated from Oxford University last summer and has been working in a pharmaceutical consultancy company for the last six months.

      Recommendation: £150

1.4. Hannah Pearse, Winchester

Hannah (18) has been selected to take part in a volunteer project in Calcutta for one month between July and August this year. The work will include teaching English to children in an orphanage and caring for young people with disabilities. The total cost of the project is £995, of which Hannah has managed to raise £550.

      Recommendation: £150

1.5. Victoria Batten, Copnor

Victoria is currently a full-time student at Havant College and has a conditional offer of a place on a Business Studies degree course at Portsmouth University in 2005.

Before she takes this place up, she has been selected for a GAP project in Australia between October 2004 and August 2005 where she will be teaching underprivileged children in a local school. Total cost: £2,100.

Victoria was due to take this placement in February 2005. However, this was fully booked, leaving a shorter time to fundraise, as Victoria does not leave college until June of this year.

      Recommendation: £150

1.6. Daniel Cumby, Brighton Hill

Daniel (19) has achieved 10 GCSE's, 3 A-S Levels and is currently studying for his A Levels with a view to attending university in September.

He is a keen Irish Dancer and has competed at national and international level, attaining South England and Great Britain champion status. The costs involved for this are; costume - £50, shoes (every 3-4 months) £80, lessons - £40 per month, entry to competitions - £30 each and travel - £200 per year, approximately £1,200 in total.

In the past, Daniel has received partial financial support for his dancing from the Social Services Department.

The County School Sports Officer confirms that this request could be considered from the Talented Young People in Sport budget and that Daniel's case is worthy of support.

Recommendation: £400 from the Talented Young People in Sport Fund
