      That funding totalling £1,700 for project partnership funding be approved as follows:

Application A21 Newbury Spring Festival

      Purpose For Which Assistance Is Sought

Newbury Spring Festival will be taking place from 8 to 22 May 2004 in a variety of venues in

Newbury and Northwest Hampshire. The festival attracts audiences from Hampshire and will

also be staging a number of events in Northwest Hampshire including a recital of 17th century

Italian music in St Martin's Church, East Woodhay and by a chamber ensemble in Highclere

Castle. The festival will be offering poetry readings in Sandham Memorial Chapel tied to the

chapel's Stanley Spencer murals depicting the everyday life of soldiers in the First World War

which will be linked to workshops held with local schools. The festival will also be offering

three Hampshire schools workshops with Tibetan monks who are performing at the festival.

Supports the Corporate Strategy by:

Maximising life opportunities for Hampshire residents and specifically young people

to have access to professional arts performances and to participate in arts activities.

Previous Funding

Additional Comments The budget for this application represents the festival's income and

    expenditure for projects in the Northwest Hampshire area only. The

    festival has been unable to obtain funding for this project from

    Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for this project as the events are

              not innovative enough in nature.
