Combined European Parliamentary, Local Authority Elections 2004 and Arrangements for HFRA Annual Meeting on 14 July, 2004

1 The Government has previously announced its intention to move the date of the English local council and Greater London Authority elections to the same day as the European Parliamentary elections in 2004, namely from 6 May to 10 June, 2004.

2 This will have an impact upon the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority in terms of its Annual Meeting planned for Wednesday 26 May, 2004 as two of the Constituent Authorities, Portsmouth and Southampton are not due to make their appointments until 22 and 23 June, 2004 respectively. These may affect the overall political proportionality of the Authority. Therefore, because this may happen, the Clerk has made arrangements for the Annual Meeting of the Authority to take place at 10 am on Wednesday 14 July, 2004, Council Chamber, Borough Council Offices, Leigh Road, Eastleigh. This meeting will be to deal specifically with the Appointment of Chairman and Vice-Chairmen of the Authority and of the main committees, deputies and any other related matters.

3 The proposals within this report are compatible with the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act 1998, and considered in the light of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.

RECOMMENDATION:

That the report be noted.
