6 February |
A fire which started in the kitchen of a two storey house in Florence Road in Woolston, Southampton, spread to the rear of the building and required the attendance of 4 pumps. The body of a 79 year old female was located in the property. The fire was extinguished using 1 jet, 2 hosereels and 6 breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilation unit was used to remove the dense smoke. |
14 February |
Crews were initially mobilised to a fire involving a light fitting at the Little Chef on the A303 road at Weyhill near Andover. On arrival they quickly made pumps up to 4 and then to 6. Fire had spread rapidly through the 45 by 18 metre two-storey restaurant into the roof. It was brought under control using 1 jet, 2 hosereels, 6 breathing apparatus and an aerial ladder platform. |
4 March |
A serious fire in the derelict Swordfish Public House and Restaurant in Crofton Avenue at Lee on Solent was attended by 6 pumps, an aerial ladder platform and numerous other special appliances. The two-storey building, 30 metres by 20 metres, was severely damaged. 4 jets, an aerial ladder platform monitor and numerous breathing apparatus were used during the firefighting operation. |
9 March |
Fire Control received calls to explosions and smoke in the Barton Stacey area and mobilised three pumps as the initial attendance, despite the vague address. On arrival at Lionel Hitchen Essential Oils in Gravel Lane, crews quickly made pumps up to 6 with a request for an aerial ladder platform. The fire involved a single-storey manufacturing unit approximately 15 metres by 25 metres of which 70% was severely damaged by fire together with 30% of the contents. The incident was brought under control using 3 jets, 2 hosereels, an aerial ladder platform monitor and 20 breathing apparatus. There was potential for a major incident as large amounts of flammable liquid were stored for use in the manufacturing processes. One member of the factory staff was taken to hospital suffering from minor burns. |
9 March |
Crews mobilised to deal with a thatched roof fire at Mill Lane, Ecchinswell were confronted on arrival with a two-storey building with the roof well alight. Pumps were quickly made up to 10 with a further request for 2 water carriers to supplement poor water supplies. The 10 metre by 5 metre dwelling suffered severe fire damage to 75% of the roof and the remainder of the building was damaged by smoke and water. During the firefighting operation 3 jets, 3 hosereels and 63 breathing apparatus were used. |
17 March |
Calls were received to reports of a house fire with persons reported inside the building in Hambarn Farm at Farnham Road, Liss near Petersfield. The son of the occupier had tackled the fire and on arrival crews found that the fire was almost extinguished. Unfortunately the elderly male occupier died as a result of his injuries and his wife suffered burns to her hands and smoke inhalation. |
17 March |
A call was received to a fire at the Basingstoke Crematorium, at North Waltham. On arrival crews were confronted with a fire in the roof and pumps were made up to 8 plus an aerial ladder platform and 2 water carriers. This was a modern building 30 metres by 12 metres of traditional construction and 25% of the roof was damaged by the fire which was extinguished with 3 jets, 5 hosereels and 20 breathing apparatus. The crews had to be mindful of the sensitivity of dealing with an incident within a working crematorium. Fortunately the fire was contained to one area of the roof and the crematorium was reopened the next day. |
4 April |
Calls to a fire at AMS Integrated Systems in Fitzherbert Road at Farlington indicated that youths were on the premises and the incident was treated as persons reported. Pumps were made up to 6 and then to 10 plus 2 aerial appliances. The two-storey building, 150 metres by 60 metres, consisted of a large open warehouse with a mezzanine floor and racking containing paper records. The structure suffered 25% damage by fire and 100% by smoke. A total of 7 jets, 2 aerial monitors and 180 breathing apparatus were used during firefighting and crews were detained there for many hours. The cause was classed as doubtful but fortunately all persons were later accounted for. |
6 April |
An extensive fire was reported at Portswood Pallets in Bevois Valley, Southampton involving a large stack of wooden pallets. Pumps were made up to 4 and then 6 with 2 water carriers. Adjacent railway lines had to be closed down and isolated because of the proximity of the fire and the dense smoke. The fire engulfed a compound 40 metres by 40 metres containing wooden pallets, two temporary buildings, a lean-to, two lorries and three fork-lift trucks which were all severely damaged in the fire. The incident was brought under control using 8 jets, 1 hosereel and 6 breathing apparatus. |
7 April |
Control received numerous calls to a fire in a block of flats in South Street at Gosport. The fire involved a maisonette on the fifth floor and spread to the roof. Five pumps were required for firefighting with an additional two crews to carry out salvage work. The kitchen of the maisonette and 75% of the roof were severely damaged by fire and collapse and 20 residents were evacuated by Police and Fire Service personnel. The fire was extinguished using 2 jets, 1 hosereel, 1 aerial ladder platform and 20 breathing apparatus. Twenty people were evacuated by the Police and Fire Service and fortunately none of the residents were injured during the incident |
7 April |
Four pumping appliances and bulk foaming facilities were mobilised to Blackbushe Airport when a small jet crashed and went off the end of runway. Aviation fuel leaked from the aircraft which came to rest very close to two fuel bowsers and an LPG cylinder. Fortunately the fuel did not ignite but crews were required to standby for several hours while the scene was rendered safe. |
12 April |
A fairly small fire at Aldridge Close, Clanfield had burnt itself out by the time crews arrived at the incident. The body of an elderly female was located within the building and the cause of her death is being investigated. |
23 April |
4 Pumps, 2 Water Carriers, Aerial Ladder Platform, 1 Special Equipment Unit and l Landrover attended a serious fire in the disused Lunways Inn, A33, Kings Worthy. The fire, which severely damaged the 20m x 10m two-storey building, was extinguished using 2 jets and 1 monitor from the Aerial Ladder Platform. Firefighting operations were hampered by lack of adequate water supplies in the area. |
26 April |
A call was received reporting that two gliders had been involved in a mid-air collision near Lasham Airfield. The pilot of one glider had parachuted to safety; the other glider had crashed in Spain Lane Burkham with the pilot still on board. 3 Pumps, 1 Special Equipment Unit and 2 Landrovers attended. Attending crews extricated the trapped pilot who did not survive the crash. |
