Personal Development Grants

Report of the Chief Executive

1. Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. in accordance with the following details. These grants would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities.

1.1. Laura Dadswell, Chandlers Ford

Laura (23) has been accepted to take part in a Raleigh International expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua from 29 June until 11 September 2004. The total cost of the expedition is £3,500. Laura will be working, as part of a team on challenging community and environmental projects such as building a school or medical centre, building facilities in the rainforest to promote eco-friendly tourism and providing a livelihood for the local people. The trip aims to integrate people from all backgrounds and forge links between Britain, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Laura has raised £1,435 and asks the County Council for a contribution of £500 towards

      her costs.

      Recommendation: £150

1.2. Lucy Handford, Winchester

Lucy (19) currently works at Christ Church in Winchester. At the request of the management committee of the Kisiizi Hospital in Uganda, the Church has organised several missions in Kisiizi and the surrounding areas. The Church will hold a "common purse" of £20,000 to pay for these missions. Each member then has to raise funds of £1,000 (to cover their flight, accommodation, travel) which will then be put into this "purse" to cover these costs.

Recommendation: A grant would benefit Christ Church and, indirectly the hospital in Uganda. It would, therefore, not be appropriate to award a grant on this occasion.

1.3. Kirsty Woods, Boorley Green, Botley

Kirsty is part of a group of fifteen people, from the Eastleigh Bukedi Link, taking part in a three-week project in July to build a catering school for disadvantaged children at All Saints Church in Pallisa, Uganda. She has been asked to raise £1,000 towards her costs to cover flights, travel, living expenses, etc.

      Recommendation: £150

1.4. Jonathan Love, Fleet

Jonathan is currently studying medicine at Sheffield University and with that in mind is planning a work-experience placement in Peru this summer, with the organisation Medics-Away. He has to raise £2,000 to cover his expenses whilst gaining this work experience.

In 1998, Jonathan received a grant of £100 from the County Council to take part in a Project Trust placement in South Africa.

Recommendation: Nil, in view of grant being awarded previously.
