1. Summary

1.1 The following decision is sought:

    That a revenue grant of £20,000 be made to The Prince's Trust in support of a volunteer support worker post.

2. Reason

    To respond to a request from The Prince's Trust for support for a volunteer support worker for the coming year.

    This decision supports Aim 1 (Maximising life opportunities) of the Corporate Strategy by helping disadvantaged young people to overcome barriers.

1. Introduction

1.1 The Prince's Trust has sought a continuation of support for a volunteer support worker, in Hampshire.

1.2 The Recreation and Heritage Department of Hampshire County Council, sees The Prince's Trust, in Hampshire as a prime mover in maximising life opportunities (Corporate Aim 1) for disadvantaged young people who need to overcome barriers and get their lives working.

2. The Prince's Trust in Hampshire

2.1 The volunteer force involved in the work of the Trust in Hampshire are a key resource which needs care, support,. encouragement and positive direction in order that they are used effectively and in certain target areas. To make the Trust in Hampshire more effective a continuation of funding is required for a volunteer support worker to stimulate, engage and support the volunteer base. There are currently over 300 volunteers which this post will be able to support.

3. Area of Benefit

3.1 Disadvantaged younger members of the public in Hampshire will benefit directly form the Trust's activities. The Prince's Trust offers practical solutions to help young people get their lives working. It helps 14-30 year olds through practical support including training, mentoring and financial assistance, to realise their potential and transform their lives. Its efforts are focused on those who have struggled at school, been in care, been in trouble with the law, or are long term unemployed. The volunteers are used in all areas of the Trusts work.

4. Other Support

4.1 Last year an initial grant of £20,000 was made by the Policy and Resources Executive Member in October 2003 and the Recreation and Heritage Executive Member asked to consider funding for future years.

5. Local Member

5.1 The Prince's Trust benefits all parts of Hampshire

Recommendation

    That a grant of £20,000 be made to support the Volunteer Support Worker for this coming year.
