SCHOOL TERM AND HOLIDAY DATES 2005/06

1. The Executive Member for Education has considered the pattern of school term and holiday dates for 2005/06, broadly in accordance with the decision taken by the Cabinet in 2002 to move towards a school year based on a more even distribution of holiday periods. He did so following full consultations with teachers' associations and with neighbouring local authorities.

2. Although there still remain some concerns on the part of staff associations, it is apparent that the vast majority of other Local Education Authorities close to Hampshire, including our immediate neighbours, have adopted or are in the process of adopting the pattern of standardised dates which is set out in the Appendix to this report.

3. These dates ensure a high degree of conformity with our neighbours and also achieve a pattern of more equal term length. The Executive Member has therefore adopted the schedule of term and holiday dates set out in the appendix to this report.

4. The above decision supports aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy (maximising life opportunities) by establishing a uniform approach to school terms and holidays.
