PROPOSALS TO DEVELOP OR VARY NHS SERVICES

1. Maternity services in Portsmouth and southeast Hampshire continue to be of high profile and a joint committee consisting of representatives of Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council and the Isle of Wight Council Health and Scrutiny Committees has now been convened.

2. The Hampshire Partnership has alerted the Committee to proposals to re-provide adult mental health services on the Royal South Hants Hospital site. A business plan is being developed which forms part of an integrated health strategy to deliver the NHS Plan and National Service Framework for mental health through a modern local service that will provide high quality care for patients in Southampton and the southern parishes of Eastleigh. A Joint Committee has been established consisting of representatives of Hampshire County Council and Southampton City Council Health Overview and Scrutiny Committees to consider any substantial variation or development to these services.

3. The Committee has been alerted to the formal consultation that Fareham and Gosport Primary Care Trust is conducting to identify future NHS services in the area. An additional meeting of the Committee has been convened for 21 October 2004 to give consideration to the outcome of the consultation process.

4. This supports Aims 1,4 and 5 of the Corporate Strategy.
