1. Summary
1.1 The following decision is sought:
That the attached project appraisal to deliver the National Cycle Network from Basingstoke to Alton and Alresford, at an estimated cost of £68,000, be approved.
2. Reason
2.1 This decision supports Aim 1 (Maximising Life Opportunities) and Aim 2 (Stewardship of the Environment) of the Corporate Strategy by promoting a cycle route which can be used as an alternative to the car and by improving access between local communities and the countryside.
2.2 The scheme will provide opportunities for an increase in cycling in this part of Hampshire, leading to increased cycle trips to school, to work and for leisure. The scheme will also link up with an existing National Cycle Network (NCN) route, linking Basingstoke with Reading, which was opened in June 2003.
3. Other Options Considered and Rejected
3.1 Not to approve the project appraisal for the delivery of the NCN between Basingstoke, Alton and Alresford.
3.2 To route the NCN along an alternative Rights of Way through Chawton Park Wood, namely Bridleway 4 and Byway 9, Chawton Parish.
4. Conflicts of Interest Declared by the Decision Maker or Other Executive Member Consulted - None.
5. Dispensation granted by the Standards Committee - Not applicable.
6. Reason(s) for the Matter being dealt with if Urgent - Not applicable.
