Personal Development Grants

1 Summary

    Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-

1.1 Symon Stratton, Beaulieu

    Simon (19) has been accepted by Quest Overseas to join a team of sixteen GAP year students taking part in a month-long social project in a shanty town in Lima, Peru from January next year. He will be helping local children with various tasks including repairing playgrounds, installing cinemas and helping the local schoolchildren to discover their own talents. Simon has to raise the necessary £5,000 by Christmas and in order to achieve this target he will be working part-time in a retail environment.

    Recommendation: £150

1.2 Yolanda Massey, Romsey

    Last year, Yolanda (18) received a grant of £160 from the County Council to fund her participation in a church related project in Uganda, where she was part of a team of ten young people working in a local hospital for a month and assisting with their AIDS awareness programme for another month. Yolanda is returning this year to undertake the same activities.

    Next year, Yolanda also hopes to take part in a six-month project in a school for underprivileged children in India.

    Recommendation: Nil in view of grant being awarded previously.

1.3 Hayley Fitton, Tadley

    Hayley (20) has been invited to visit one of the four Girl Guide World Centre's in Pune, India for two weeks in January 2005. The group, from all over England, will be working together to build a playground for scouts, young children and the local community. They will also learn about the local culture and traditions. Total cost of the visit is £1,100 and Hayley is currently fundraising to achieve this sum.

    Last year Hayley received a grant of £100 towards the "Roverway" guide project in Portugal.

    Recommendation: Nil in view of grant being awarded previously.

    RECOMMENDATIONS:

    That grants be awarded in the sums shown above to young people in Hampshire.
