You will find attached the relevant sections of the Government's paper on Public Health - `Choosing Health'. The Health Scrutiny Committee will be looking at the other sections and taking them forward as they deal in the main with the NHS and other partnership organisations. Sections 4, 7 & 8 are pertinent for us as they cover issues that relate to Hampshire County Council directly.

Please skim through the sections if you can and when doing so look for three key themes:

a) What specific actions might we as the County Council want to be active and proactive in (or are already)?

b) Are there issues for us as an Employer (Section 7)?

c) Are there drivers for Hampshire County Council being proactive / innovative and starting work on having an overall strategy for Public Health? (Section 8 and Appendix B)

At the P&R SSC meeting you will need to decide:

1 Does the Committee want to request some research as to:

    · What departments are already doing in relation to Public Health?

    · What we currently do in relation to the Health of Hampshire's employees?

2 Would the Committee like to hear about any of the following from external sources:

    · what other Council's are doing with regard to provision for their own staff

    · ideas as to proactive health strategies we could be taking for our staff

3 Would the Committee like to do further work in initiating a strategy for Public Health in Hampshire County Council? Much of this would require some research on item 1) above first but possibilities include:

    · Getting an external speaker to help us understand the possibilities

    · Commissioning research into what other drivers may exist for us taking this approach?

    · Asking a small task group from the Committee to come up with some possible recommendations?
