ROMSEY INFANT AND JUNIOR SCHOOLS
CLOSURE AND ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
1. Notice is hereby given, in accordance with sections 28 and 29 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, that Hampshire County Council, being the Local Education Authority, intends:
(a) to discontinue Romsey Infant School, at Plaza Parade, Winchester Road and Romsey Junior School, at Mercer Way, Romsey, with effect from 31 August 2006; and
(b) to establish a new community primary school, to cater for 210 boys and girls, irrespective of ability, aged 4 - 11, and a maintained nursery class providing 30 places for children aged 3 - 4, in the premises of Romsey Junior School, Mercer Way, Romsey, with effect from 1 September 2006.
2. In order to achieve these intentions it is proposed that
(a) Romsey Infant and Junior Schools will cease to be organised as separate schools after the end of the Summer Term 2006. Pupils in attendance at these schools at that time, who are not due to transfer to secondary school, will attend the new primary school, based in the current Romsey Junior School premises, from the start of the Autumn Term 2006. The primary school will also use the current Romsey Infant School premises during the 2006/07 school year, while building works on the Romsey Junior School site are being completed.
(b) The primary school to be established in the premises of Romsey Junior School will serve the area currently served by Romsey Infant and Junior Schools. The Local Education Authority will be the admission authority for the school. Pupils will be admitted to the school in accordance with the arrangements that are published each year prior to the date on which applications for admission must be made. In the school year 2006/07, and subsequent school years, the school will admit 30 pupils at the age of 4+. Transport to the school will be provided for pupils who qualify in accordance with the Local Education Authority's published policy.
(c) The primary school will incorporate new accommodation for the nursery unit that is currently part of Romsey Infant School, to provide part time places for 30 children. Admission to the nursery unit will not automatically entitle pupils to be admitted to the primary school at the normal age of admission.
(d) The new primary school will deliver community cohesion by providing facilities and shared opportunities for local families in central Romsey.
3. Any person may object to, or comment on, these proposals within the period of six weeks from the date of publication of this notice. Objections or comments should be in writing and addressed to Ian Lawson, Strategic Planning Unit, Education Department, Hampshire County Council, The Castle, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 8UG to arrive no later than 5 pm on 3 December 2004. Any objections or comments received, and not subsequently withdrawn in writing, together with the Local Education Authority's observations on them, will be submitted to the School Organisation Committee for Hampshire within one month after the closing date for representations.
