Look at using synthetic oils to reduce filters etc

WORKSHOPS :- WORK

POSITIVE COMMENTS

System in which important defects are dealt with are second to none

Enjoy one off jobs which trial new equipment

Pre-sorted service packs improve service

Enjoying being duty fitter being my own boss

Enjoy the diversity of jobs with in the department

NEGATIVE COMMENTS

Repetitive unrewarding tasks i.e. PAT testing

We do not seem to source spare parts from enough different suppliers, if the usual supplier has not got it then it cannot be got

Chasing vehicles to locate them to carry out work wastes time

Cleaning up after other people

Time wasted on pointless defects

SUGGESTIONS

Larger area for each trade to work without having to enter another trade area and creating time delays

Involve staff more i.e. communications hence the feel involved factor

Improve the method of service to allow several trades to work on the same vehicle at once

Better planning to control down time

Involve staff /feedback to encourage improvement

Review sequence of personnel when carrying out service of vehicles which could improve turn round time

Inform stations before going out to reduce delays

Better communications with stations and interrogations of defect before mechanic sent out

Store man on the first floor creating a self-service if you are in a hurry

WORKSHOPS :- FACILITIES

POSITIVE COMMENTS

NEGATIVE COMMENTS

Many comments criticising all personal facilities and lack of general cleanliness around the whole complex

Very poor facilities for meetings, small work areas, toilets poor.

Lack of cleanliness of toilets and canteen

SUGGESTIONS

Improvement of the facilities would increase enthusiasm to work

Modern facilities including toilets and designated workstations

Designated training/meeting room required

WORKSHOPS :- VEHICLES

POSITIVE COMMENTS

Most vehicles seem to be in reasonable condition, busy stations seem to have the biggest problem in cleanliness

NEGATIVE COMMENTS

Vehicle standards have declined in recent years

A lot of wear and tear due to lack of basic care and common sense by station personnel

Radios left on causing batteries to go flat normally because personnel are listening to HX

SUGGESTIONS

Certain defects are avoidable i.e. flat battery, winch cables

Damage to upholstery is avoidable with care by the user

Don't let fire fighters fit anything to the vehicles

Better records of use would assist technicians and could decrease defects

WORKSHOPS :- HEALTH AND SAFETY

POSITIVE COMMENTS

PPE has improved dramatically

NEGATIVE COMMENTS

Too much stuff lying around on the floor

Standard of waterproofs very poor attempts to obtain certain one off item for PPE

First aid boxes especially eyewash not replenished on a regular basis

Trailing leads on shop floor are a problem

Regretfully until management change their culture there will always be a "they're not bothered, why should I be" attitude

Prescription safety glasses don't appear to be available in workshops as they are in other departments of the service

Bad fitting/cheap and nasty overalls does not present a good image to the public

SUGGESTIONS

Educate staff to always use PPE that is provided

More regular inspections

Workforce to tidy up straight away to improve safety

Remind management of their responsibilities under H & S

Union rep to be involved with safety issues and meeting

Designated clean area for first aid to be carried out i.e. small cuts etc

WORKSHOPS :- GENERAL

POSITIVE COMMENTS

Many diverse skills and attributes and afford good value

NEGATIVE COMMENTS

Reducing quality in the pursuit of cost or over zealous outsourcing is likely to be a short gain

Poor apprenticeships

Fairness and dignity policy does not apply to workshops, some members of staff have been treated in the most appalling way, resulting in sickness absence

Many frustrations to be overcome

SUGGESTIONS

After the review works shops needs a new start, brighter way of working. Initiatives from the top with clear standards to be achieved by all

Allow greater communication between the individual and other departments

Comprehensive training with updates for fire fighters regarding equipment

Closer monitoring of defects by appliance/station may help with saving time and money if common faults occur

The workshop should be more proactive and creative to meet the new demands facing the service

Give apprentices a chance to work in other departments = more versatility

Find a way of reducing avoidable defects from stations

A week longer in fit out could save recalls for defects on appliances

If less than 75% of the workforce respond to this survey the finding would not be a fair representative view of the personnel

Hope that the opportunity to review the operation of workshops will lead to thoughtfully considered improvements of our service to our customers
