Sports Bursary Award Increase

Report of the Director of Recreation and Heritage

Contact: Tim Dancer Ext:6283 [email protected]

1. Summary

1.1 The following decision is sought:

That subject to the support of the Executive Member for Recreation & Heritage, the upper limit of the financial range of the Sports Bursary award be increased to a maximum of £700 per applicant. This increase can be met from within the current Sports Bursary budget.

2. Reason

2.1 The Sports Bursary scheme provides financial assistance for talented sportspeople within Hampshire to assist them with travel, equipment, training and coaching costs. The range of bursaries available have not increased from the maximum award of £500 since 1993 yet the cost of competing and training at this high level has risen significantly over the same period.

2.2 The increase in the upper limit of Sports Bursary awards will contribute to the corporate aim of maximising life opportunities by offering talented and gifted sportspeople in Hampshire appropriate financial assistance to help them reach their full potential.

3. Other options considered and rejected

      · Not increasing the maximum bursary available.

4. Conflicts of interest declared by the decision maker or other Executive Member consulted

    None.

5. Dispensation granted by the Standards Committee

6. Reason(s) for the matter being dealt with if urgent -
