1 Summary
Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-
1.1 Mark Stanton, Andover
Mark (aged 17) attends Peter Symonds College in Winchester and is taking part in a Raleigh International expedition to Chile between September and December this year. He will be working with people from all backgrounds and nationalities on challenging environmental and community projects. Total cost of this expedition is £3,500 and he has so far managed to raise/planning to raise £2,400.
Recommendation: £150
1.2 Tanya Playford, West End and Emily Hatcher, Basingstoke
This year, Tanya (17) and Emily (16) have been invited to attend a Girl Guiding Jamboree in Oregon, USA between 9 and 17 July, costing each of them £1,200.
Tanya attends Barton Peverill College in Eastleigh and Emily, Costello Technology College in Basingstoke.
Recommendation: £150 each
1.3 Emma Whitehouse, Silchester
Emma (23) has been selected to take part in a "Trekforce Expeditions" project in Belize in January 2006. It will be a jungle project lasting eight weeks and include conservation, construction and development of the jungle and the surrounding communities of Belize.
Emma works in the outdoor industry and is undertaking this trip to gain more environmental volunteer experience.
Recommendation: Unlike other applicants shown in the report, Emma is not in
full-time education but works in the outdoor industry and, in view of this, it may not be appropriate to award a grant.
1.4 Emma Ashman, Eastleigh
Between 26 July and 7 August this year, Emma (14) is taking part in an International Guide Camp in Sweden. The camp will be for 5,000 guides and includes programme areas called Forest Sea, Mountain, Adventure and Scouting. The total cost of attending the camp is £600 which is to pay for flights, accommodation, etc.
Emma attends Thornden Secondary School in Chandlers Ford.

1.5 Christopher Sawdon, South Wonston
Christopher (18) has been invited by Joint Service Cadet Forces Expeditions (JSCFE) an organisation which incorporates all the cadet forces to undertake an expedition in East Africa between 9 July and 10 August this year.
A team of 40 cadets and instructors will attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, undertake a community project and a vehicle safari. Each participant is expected to contribute £1,500 towards their expenses.
Christopher is a full-time second-year student at Peter Symonds' College and has already raised £320 towards his sum.
Recommendation: £150
