THE EDUCATION OTHER THAN AT SCHOOL (EOTAS) SERVICE AND SCHOOL EXCLUSIONS 2003/04
1. The Executive Member for Education has given his continued support to the EOTAS Service for their proactive work with schools and other services and agencies in providing effective behaviour management support and guidance in order to reduce the level of permanent exclusion.
2. The report before the Executive Member set out the full year statistics for the 2003-04 academic year. They show a fall in the number of permanent exclusions and highlight in particular:
- the contribution of the Behaviour Support Teams, working with schools in reducing primary phase permanent exclusions by almost 50% since 2001/02.
- the work of the EOTAS Service, working with schools, in reducing overall permanent exclusions by 4.8% in 2003/04, compared to 2002/03.
- the continued fall in permanent exclusions in the autumn term 2004 compared to the autumn term 2003.
3. Of particular note is the progress being made with regard to supporting behaviour management, particularly in the light of "Every Child Matters", the Children Act and the Local Education Authority's ongoing review of behaviour support.
4. This supports aim 1 (maximising life opportunities) of the Corporate Strategy through the provision of education for children who are unwell or who have been permanently excluded from school, in order to prepare them for post-school life.
