Report of the County Education Officer

ITEM 8

Contact: Clive Erricker - County Inspector - RE (02392 441459)

1. Summary

1.1 The new Agreed Syllabus for Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton was published in September 2004 and, since that date, has been the statutory guidance for RE in Hampshire schools

1.2 Ongoing monitoring of the effect of the implementation of the Agreed Syllabus has been requested by SACRE

1.3 This interim report presents progress achieved so far

2.1 Nine courses have been delivered on the Implementation of the Agreed Syllabus for Hampshire Schools. These offered initial training for secondary, primary and special school teachers. A total of 252 secondary, primary, and special school teachers each attended one of these courses. Evaluations received on these courses have been positive

2.2 The Hampshire RE inspectors have also given training requested by groups of schools, at Panel and Consortia meetings, and by individual schools

2.3 Four County Development Groups, two secondary and two primary, were set up in July 2004 to develop units of work based upon the new syllabus. These are financially supported by the County Council. A Handbook to accompany the Agreed Syllabus, with units of work, will be published in the Autumn Term 2005.

2.4 Regional Development Groups, one secondary and four primary, have been initiated to complement and, in 2006-7, supersede the initiative undertaken through the County Development Groups. These groups are financially supported by schools

2.5 Ongoing dissemination of good practice occurs through the RE Newsletters and RE website

2.6 The new Agreed Syllabus has attracted national attention through an article in the Times Educational Supplement (Appendix 1) and two invitations for articles in national RE publications

2.7 The two County Advanced Skills Teachers in RE have been closely involved with the County Inspector for RE in initiating development and training for Secondary Schools. The following presentation, by one of the ASTs, will report on her involvement in her role as an AST and as a Head of RE.
