1. Summary

1.1 The monitoring sub group meets regularly, usually termly, in order to monitor the provision of RE and collective worship in Hampshire schools. This is achieved through scrutiny of Ofsted reports and GCSE data. Schools with positive reports are sent letters of congratulations and encouragement on behalf of SACRE. Schools that cause concern are approached by Hampshire inspectors to ask what strategies have been put in place by the school to rectify the shortcomings.

The group met on 25 April 2005.

1.2 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

i) Eight secondary school reports were viewed. Two letters of congratulations are to be sent to schools that received positive reports.

ii) Two special school reports were viewed. One letter of encouragement is being sent to a special school.

iii) Seventeen primary phase school reports were viewed. Two schools are to be sent letters of congratulations.

1.3 COLLECTIVE WORSHIP

i) Six secondary school reports on the provision for collective worship were viewed.

All of the six reports indicated that the schools were not meeting the statutory requirements for collective worship.

The RE inspector has been in communication with two of the schools. He will contact the other four schools offering support to develop their provision for collective worship.

ii) Six primary phase reports on collective worship provision were viewed. All six schools were reported to be meeting the statutory requirements in relation to collective worship.


1.4 The group discussed the difficulties that secondary schools experience in meeting the statutory requirements for collective worship. The chair of the group recommended that the full SACRE meeting should discuss the problems and consider a way forward for advising schools.

Recommendation

That SACRE request the monitoring sub group to further research the issue concerning collective worship provision in secondary schools and report back to the full SACRE at a future meeting.
