Personal Development Grants

1 Summary

    Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-

1.1 Rebecca Scrace, Andover

    Rebecca (14) has been invited to attend a Girl Guiding Camporee in Oregon, USA between 9 and 23 July, costing £1,200, for which she has already raised £695. The Camporee will involve working with guides from many parts of America and Canada on service projects and activities in the arts, science and sports fields.

    Rebecca attends John Hanson Community School in Andover and this opportunity will help increase Rebecca's confidence.

    Recommendation: £150

1.2 Sandra Ferreira, Andover

    Sandra (20) is currently at the University of Nottingham studying Management Studies with Spanish. Part of her course is made up of a year spent outside of the UK and she is choosing to spend this time in Puerto Rico with a charity called AIESEC (an international student organisation). The placement will be from 1 July this year and involves developing ethical leadership within the young people and promoting cultural and ethical understanding within the business community.

    Sandra's student loan will pay for her university fees but will not cover this placement, which is a voluntary position and costing £4,000. She has managed to raise £600 towards her costs which include flights, visas, insurances, vaccinations and living expenses.

    Recommendation: £400

1.3 Victoria Marsh, Hedge End

    Victoria (18) has been invited by Joint Service Cadet Forces Expeditions (JSCFE), an organisation which incorporates all the cadet forces, to undertake an expedition in Tanzania, East Africa between 11 July and 10 August this year.

    A team of 40 cadets and instructors will attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, undertake a community project in the area and a vehicle safari. The expedition will provide a safe yet demanding challenge and the experience will encourage teamwork, personal development and a greater understanding of the world we live in. Each participant is expected to contribute £1,500 towards their expenses.

    Victoria, who attends Peter Symonds' College in Winchester studying Physics, Maths, Further Maths and General Studies has managed to raise just over £1,000 towards her target.

    Recommendation: £150

1.4 Katie Underhill, West End

    Katie (15) currently attends Wildern School in Hedge End. The South West region of the Girl Guides has offered Katie a place at this year's Iceland Jamboree "Earth's Energy" which takes place between 19 July and 1 August. She is expected to raise £1,500 towards her costs which will include travel, accommodation, insurance, etc.

    She has so far managed to raise £325 towards the above-mentioned costs.

    Recommendation: £150

1.5 Gabriella Cox, Sarisbury Green and Olivia Smith, Curdridge

    Gabriella and Olivia (both 14) have been selected to attend an international guide trip "Skogsroj 05" in Sweden this summer. This will provide them with the opportunity of comparing different cultures and language and once there they will explore the sites in Stockholm. Each guide is expected to raise £750 towards their costs.

    Gabriella is a member of the 1st Sholing Guides and Olivia a member of 1st Broad Oak Guide Unit.

    Recommendation: £150 each
