Summary of Bid (Details of proposed activity the money will be spent on) |
As part of the Gosport 800 anniversary celebrations, The Partnership Board is organising a youth festival which will be held in Gosport in July 2005. Known as `Alive n' Activ8', the festival will celebrate young people and showcase their talents, fashions, music, dance, food, culture, sport and art. The festival will include a series of events at venues across the borough from 2nd July culminating in a day of activities in Walpole Park on Saturday 9th July and a music and dance event at St Vincent's College in the evening. Members of Gosport Youth Council are helping to organise the festival with the support of Gosport Borough Council, Groundwork, Schools, Police and PCT. The festival is aimed at all young people aged 12-16 and HCC Youth Service are a key partner in supporting and helping to organise the event. The day itself will include a huge range of sports, arts, fashion, music and environmental activities. The emphasis will be on fun but it will also provide a great opportunity to engage and consult with young people across a range of issues. Specifically we will promote healthy lifestyles, give advice and information on clubs and activities in the area and raise awareness of issues around youth crime, drugs, alcohol and teenage pregnancy. All of these have been identified as priorities in Gosport's Community Strategy. We would like to apply for £2,500 to support the costs of hiring marquees, putting on activities, displays, materials and hiring equipment for the evening music event. A budget is detailed below. |
Timescale (anticipated period over which the money will be spent) |
The youth festival will run over a 2 week period from 2nd July 2005 until 16th July 2005. The day itself will be held on Saturday 9th July. The funding will be spent within this period. |
How does this bid support the targets within the Community Strategy? |
Alive n Activ8 will support the following targets and priorities identified in Gosport's Community Strategy; Health and well being Specialist organisations including connexions, Sexsense, PCT and police have been invited to attend the youth festival and raise awareness of specific health related issues including teenage pregnancy, drugs and alcohol and the advantages of healthy living. We will also be encouraging more young people to take up healthy lifestyles by providing a range of sports `taster' sessions. Community safety Youth crime has been a particular issue in Gosport. We will use the youth festival to increase awareness of crime and look at ways in which young people can protect themselves from being victims of crime. We will also use the event to provide information on the dangers of drug and substance misuse. Transport A priority in Gosport is to improve cycling and safety for pedestrians. Many young people rely on walking and cycling for their independence and to get around. It is imperative that they are involved in planning and promoting safe and sustainable transport and we will consult and promote this issue at the youth festival. Education and training One of the key issues facing Gosport's economy is it relatively low skills base. Partner organisations will be encouraged to use the youth festival to promote the wide variety of training opportunities available to young people in the borough. Connexions will help to provide information about careers advice and the involvement of the secondary schools will help to promote the advantages of staying in education and the opportunities outside of formal academic qualifications. Environment and Leisure, recreation, culture and tourism Young people are actively involved in a range of environmental and leisure projects in the borough including improvements to skate parks, play areas and other facilities such as youth shelters. The festival will promote greater involvement in these projects and can be used to help identify priorities for further improvements . Taster sessions will encourage young people to try different sports and an art exhibition being planned with the support of the secondary schools will promote young people's artistic abilities to a wide audience. In addition to these specific priorities the youth council, formed in 2000 has representation on the Partnership board. It provides a forum to consult with and engage young people on a range of issues affecting the quality of their lives. The Gosport Community Strategy will be revised and updated during 2005. The youth festival will provide an ideal opportunity to consult with young people and ensure their views are reflected in the revised strategy. |
