Community Action Hampshire is the lead agency for work on priority 1 of the community strategy, "Tackling deprivation". This is work which CAH is keen to undertake, but it requires significantly more staff time than can be made available from our own resources in order to do a thorough job; the situation has been aggravated by a vacancy in recent months in the relevant part of the CAH staff team.

The detail of the work has already been described in HSP meeting papers, but, in essence, is the analysis of deprivation data not at a general, county-wide level, but rather in detail in a handful of locations chosen to offer contrasts to one another - urban/rural, north of the county/south and so on.

In this way, it should be possible to identify what patterns and issues are emerging which may have relevance for similar areas in other parts of the county.

CAH would like to appoint a specialist consultant to undertake this work as soon as possible. We would like the analysis to be carried out over the summer and early autumn. We are aware that priority 1 is the least advanced so far and are keen and anxious to rectify that state of affairs.

How does this bid support the targets within the Community Strategy?

As described above, this is an integral part of work to develop the countywide community strategy. This bid is submitted on the understanding that some money has been identified specifically to assist named lead co-ordinating agencies in their work.

CAH anticipates contributing about £1,600 to this work, given that some of the time of the currently vacant post would have been dedicated to this. As it is anticipated that the cost could be about £5,000 (ie 25 days at £200 per day), a contribution of £3,400 is sought
