1. Summary
1.1 The following decision is sought:
That the Executive Member for Policy and Resources adopts, on behalf of the County Council, the Lepe to Calshot Key Area Working Group's preferred coastal defence policies (as in paragraph 3.1 of the attached report) for submission for inclusion in the West Solent Coastal Defence Strategy.
1.2 On 8 April 2004 the Executive Member for Policy and Resources considered the Review of the Effects of Climate Change on the County Council's Coastal Interests, and approved courses of action, including the setting up of working groups to examine the issues and options for key areas of County Council landholdings, highways and rights of way. This report summarises progress on the four key area working groups that have been established to date, and recommends preferred shoreline management policies for the Lepe to Calshot area.
2. Reason
2.1 These decisions support Aim 2 of the Corporate Strategy (Stewardship of the Environment) by finding creative solutions that allow the County Council's services to be maintained satisfactorily whilst providing a more sustainable approach to coastal defence.
2.2 This report was considered by the Policy and Resources Scrutiny and Select Committee on 11 July 2005.
3. Other Options Considered and Rejected
3.1 The option of doing nothing was considered and rejected, because it would lead to growing difficulties in protecting the County Council's coastal interests, and increasing uncertainty.
4. Conflicts of Interest Declared by the Decision Maker or Other Executive Member Consulted - None.
5. Dispensation granted by the Standards Committee - Not applicable.
6. Reason(s) for the Matter being dealt with if Urgent - Not applicable.
