1. Summary
1.1 The following decision is sought:
That a contribution of £5,000 is made to the cost of hosting the AER Rural Development conference in Exeter on 19 and 20 October 2005.
2. Reason
2.1 This will be a high profile conference expected to attract 120 delegates from regions across Europe and is the major event organised by AER Committee C this year. Devon County Council took over responsibility for hosting it at short notice when Gloucestershire County Council pulled out, and estimate total costs to be £15,500.
2.2 It was felt important for the UK member regions to continue to support the event, particularly as it coincides with the UK Presidency of the EU. There is also an opportunity for Hampshire to contribute to the content of the event, and this will be done with a presentation on the rural pathfinder and facilitation of a workshop on access to services in rural areas, including a short presentation on issues for access to education in rural areas in Hampshire.
2.3 This supports aims 2 (Stewardship of the Environment) and 4 (Building Strong and Safe Communities) of the Corporate Strategy.
3. Other options considered and rejected: Not applicable.
4. Conflicts of interest declared by the decision maker or other Executive Member consulted - Not applicable.
5. Dispensation granted by the Standard's Committee - Not applicable.
6. Reason(s) for the matter being dealt with if urgent - Not applicable.
