National Conference: Respect for All

Report of the Director for Children's Services

ITEM 5

Contact: Clive Erricker - County Inspector - RE (02392 441459)

1. Summary

1.1 This report summarises the activities of the national conference: Respect for All.

1.2 This paper supports Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy (maximising life opportunities) and Aim 4 of the Corporate Strategy (building strong and safe communities). The conference addressed the contribution of RE to the school curriculum and the importance of bringing together young people of different faiths to work toward common goals.

2. Background

2.1 The Chair of SACRE and the Advanced Skills Teacher for RE on SACRE attended the Respect for All Conference on 27 September 2005. (Appendix 1)

2.2 The conference presented initiatives in RE in Bradford that identified RE as having a key role to play in modern life and especially in relation to cohesion in a pluralist society. This included a high level of cooperation between school and support in the training of teachers.

2.3 The Bradford project offers a model for how other SACREs and Local Authorities might address the government initiative on racial and social cohesion that is now a responsibility of SACREs alongside RE and Collective Worship.

Recommendation

That SACRE note the report and consider how initiatives reported on from the conference could contribute to its development plan.
