Hampshire Athletics Association

5,000

Hampshire Athletics Association oversee the development of athletics across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. During the last 2 years they have employed, through the payroll of Hampshire County Council, a part-time development officer (30 hours per week) who has been instrumental in the development and delivery of a programme of athletics activity that has led to:

    · Over 1,500 young people taking part in local athletics coaching through 11 successful school-club links schemes

    · 800 young people taking part in the athletics events at the Hampshire Games, including the innovative Parallel Games

    · Over 150 new junior club members

    · 300 talented young athletes given further coaching and support to develop their skills

    · Over 40 newly qualified athletics coaches

Funding via the national sports lottery will end completely on 31 March 2006. Sport Hampshire & IOW (which members will know is a partnership comprising of Hampshire and Isle of Wight's local authorities, Governing Bodies of Sport and other national, regional and county wide organisations) has identified athletics as a priority sport in its Sports Partnership Strategy development, and more recently through a review of priority sports with partners during the summer of 2005. Furthermore, athletics forms part of the County Council's delivery plans for the Local Public Service Agreement (LPSA2) adult physical activity target. The athletics development officer is being asked to deliver a programme of "adult returner" athletics courses over the next 3 years.

Partners have identified £17,200 of partnership funding - in addition, the existing school-club links funding from the Governing Body is highly likely to continue but cannot be confirmed until March 2006. A contribution of £5,000 from Hampshire County Council would make up the remaining shortfall and allow this vital and successful work to continue.

Hampshire Netball

Hampshire Netball are in an identical position to that of athletics in that the netball development officer role will end on 31 March 2006 without new funding to replace lottery funding.

Hampshire Netball has employed, through the payroll of Hampshire County Council, a full-time development officer who has been instrumental in the development and delivery of a netball programme that has already led to:

Over 1,000 young people participating in netball activities

11 new junior netball clubs

450 talented young women given further coaching to develop their skills

Over 400 coaches, officials and volunteers supported to achieve governing body qualifications

Funding, via the national sports lottery will end completely on 31 March 2006. Like athletics, Sport Hampshire & IOW identified netball as a priority sport through the Sports Partnership Strategy and the review of sports with partners during the summer of 2005. The netball development role also forms part of the County Council's delivery plans for the LPSA2 adult physical activity target over the next 3 years and the netball development officer is being asked to deliver a programme of "adult returner" netball courses.

Hampshire Netball has worked hard over many years to be self sufficient but the gap left by the ending of national lottery funding is one that they are not able to fill in the short term.

Hampshire Netball has identified funding of £31,500 from Partnership funding of which £5,000 from Hampshire County Council will make up the shortfall and allow for the continuation of this vital development work.
