1. Summary
1.1 Further analysis has been undertaken of the responses to the Hampshire Now consultation on proposed housing distribution to better understand the results.
Homes on Previously Developed Land
1.2 The first analysis looked at responses to Question 1 which explored peoples' attitudes to levels of house building proposed on previously developed land. A range of 65% to 79% of residents in the four districts wholly within urban South Hampshire (Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport and Havant) thought that the figure of 38,000 new homes was "too much". This is more than the range of 48% to 57% of residents who gave the same response but live in the four districts partly within urban South Hampshire (East Hampshire, New Forest, Test Valley and Winchester).
1.3 The conclusion is that people living within the more urbanised districts (Gosport, Fareham, Havant and Eastleigh) are more concerned with this issue than those from the less urbanised authorities (those parts of East Hampshire, Test Valley, Winchester and New Forest within urban South Hampshire). Graph 1 overleaf shows the differences. There is no data for Southampton or Portsmouth as they were not covered by the Hampshire Now survey.
North of Fareham Strategic Development Area
1.4 The second analysis looked at responses to Question 2 which explored peoples' attitudes to the Strategic Development Area proposed to the north of Fareham (see Graph 2 overleaf).
1.5 As a general rule, the closer residents live to the proposed SDA the less support there is for it. Some 87% of residents in the Knowle/Wickham area were either not very supportive or not supportive at all. This lack of support dropped slightly to 78% of people living to the west (in and around Whiteley) and further still for residents in Fareham and Portchester (72%). These views are in marked contrast to the views of residents living elsewhere in South Hampshire, where only 39% did not support the proposal, compared with 50% who did.
North East of Hedge End SDA
1.6 The third analysis looked at responses to Question 3 which explored attitudes to the Strategic Development Area proposed to the North East of Hedge End (see Graph 3 overleaf).
1.7 Responses broadly followed the same pattern as for the Fareham SDA. People living closest to the proposed SDA were least in favour of the proposal. Some 78% of respondents in Hedge End were either not very supportive or not supportive at all. This fell to 53% of people living to the north of Hedge End. In contrast, this figure fell to 38% amongst residents elsewhere in South Hampshire, some 48% Residents' responses in the localities closest to the North East of Hedge End SDA are not at all supportive of the proposed housing, but this objection is less amongst the other South Hampshire residents. The support for a Hedge End SDA is stronger in those localities in South Hampshire that are further away from the Hedge End area (see Graph 3 overleaf).
