Contact: Terry Rath, Education Officer, tel: 01962 846457, [email protected]

1 Summary

1.1 The following decision is sought:

      1. That the Schools Meals Strategy 2005 - 2008 is agreed.

      2. That the price of school meals is increased to £1.70 per meal from April 2006 to reflect the improved food and nutritional content of the meal.

      3. That a further report is brought to the Executive Member on the implementation of the School Meal Strategy in Autumn 2006.

2 Reason

This decision supports Aims 1, 5 and 6 of the Corporate Strategy, Maximising Life Opportunities, Improving Services and Developing Councillors and Staff by providing school meals with an improved nutritional content supported by additional staff training.

This decision supports Aims 1 and 3 of the Children's Act, be healthy, enjoy and achieve through learning by providing healthy meals to help children learn at school.

3 Other Options considered and rejected:

Delaying the increase in the school meal price until later in the strategy. The impact would have been to reduce flexibility and distance the link between improved food content and price paid.
