1. Introduction
1.1 Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman may be conferred on someone who has, "in the opinion of the Council, rendered eminent service to the Council" usually as a past Member. The title cannot be conferred on a serving Member.
2. At present the Council has 15 Honorary Aldermen: former Councillors Mrs. E.S.M. Barron; Mrs. S. M. Bartlet, D.L.; N. A. Best, C.B.E., D.L.; Capt. M.P.R. Boyle, D.L.; K.H.N. Bulmer; H.R. Cole; M.T. Hancock, C.B.E., M.P.; M.M.L. Hudson, O.B.E., M.A.; S. W. Juniper JP; D.A. Keep; P. D. Merridale, C.B.E.; R. T. Millard; G. W. Porter; Mrs E.M.F. Randall and A. Varden
3. It is proposed to confer the title of Honorary Alderman on a further former member of the County Council, John Waddington.
John Waddington
John Waddington was elected County Councillor for the Ringwood County Electoral Division in May 1997 and served Ringwood continuously until his retirement in May 2005. He was appointed Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage in 2001 and was a member of the County Council's Cabinet from its inception in 2001 until his retirement. He was appointed Chairman of the former Recreation and Heritage Committee in 2000 having been its Vice Chairman since May 1997. He was Chairman of the Rights of Way Panel and Vice Chairman of the Countryside Panel. He was a member of the former Policy and Resources and Planning and Transportation Committees and served on the Roads and Development Sub-Committee. He was Chairman of the New Forest Transport Strategy Panel. He was Vice Chairman of the Pension Fund Panel from 1999 to 2005. He also represented the Council on a number of external organisations and joint committees including the Blashford Lakes Consultative Committee, the Bournemouth International Airport Consultative Committee, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Council, the Forest Forge Theatre Company Board of Directors, the Hampshire Sculpture Trust, the Martin Down Management Committee, the Milestones Museum Management Committee, the New Forest Committee, the New Forest Court of Verderers, the Red House Museum Committee and the South and East Regional Arts Council.
