THE PERFORMANCE OF HAMPSHIRE SCHOOLS 2004/05

1. The Executive Member for Education, together with the Children's Services Policy Review Committee, have received a detailed report on how Hampshire Schools are performing with particular regard to the academic year 2004/05.

2. At GCSE, there was a continued slight improvement in Hampshire where 60.9% of Year 11 pupils achieved 5 or more A*-C. 92% of pupils achieved 5 or more A* -G grades (to include English and mathematics) and 98.2% achieved 1 or more A*-G grades. All these figures are above the national averages. The figures for A* - G grades remain particularly strong when compared with our statistical neighbours.

3. At Key Stage 1, there have again been improvements in performance in reading and writing. Hampshire pupils remain ahead of the national averages in these areas. This result provides a very solid foundation for their future education. However, there has been a decline in those reaching level 3+. This may be as a result of a change in the method of assessment this academic year.

4. At Key Stage 2, performance by Hampshire pupils in English, mathematics and science has all improved and is better than our statistical neighbours and the national picture.

5. At Key Stage 3, results in English, mathematics and science place the County in the top half of its reference group when compared with its statistical neighbours with mathematics in the strongest position. The trends in this Key Stage broadly match the national pattern.

6. Hampshire schools continue to perform well and, in most key stages, improvements were achieved in 2004/05. The Executive Member has congratulated pupils, teachers and all of those who support them for their continued hard work and efforts. A copy of the Director of Children's Services report on this item has been circulated to all Hampshire Headteachers and Governing Bodies.

7. The above decision supports aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy.
