Item 4 |

1. Summary
1.1 The following decision is sought:
That the Project Appraisal for a highway safety scheme in Tukes Avenue, Gosport, at an estimated cost of £80,000, be approved.
2. Reason
2.1 This decision supports the following Aims of the Corporate Strategy:
(i) Aim 2 (Stewardship of the Environment) by improving the condition of roads and pavements;
(ii) Aim 4 (Building Strong and Safe Communities) by improving road safety; and
(iii) Aim 5 (Improving Services) by providing better crossing points for pedestrians and access to bus services.
3. Other Options Considered and Rejected
3.1 Various options have been considered to try to reduce the number of injury accidents occurring on Tukes Avenue. In September 2002 a trial was introduced to install ripple print pads; initially the scheme produced a small reduction in accidents but the improvement has not been maintained. The trial is still in place but will be modified as part of the proposed scheme. Traffic calming options, eg speed tables, were also considered but were not accepted by Gosport Members. It was felt that a scheme to achieve a reduction in vehicle speeds together with the provision of safer crossing points for pedestrians would offer the best solution to reduce the number of vulnerable road user casualties.
4. Conflicts of Interest Declared by the Decision Maker or Other Executive Member Consulted - None.
5. Dispensation granted by the Standards Committee - Not applicable.
6. Reason(s) for the Matter being dealt with if Urgent - Not applicable.
