Personal Development Grants

1 Summary

    Applications have been received from people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas and personal development projects. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-

Jack Patten, Emsworth and Rosina Dicks, Chineham

    Both Jack (16 yrs) and Rosina (17) have been invited to take part in a scouting expedition in Uganda being organised by Basingstoke West Explorer Scouts. The trip will start on 21 July 2006 for a period of three months and will involve training their fellow scouts on survival and first aid techniques, games instruction, providing advice on HIV/AIDS material and establishing a drinking well. Each person has to raise £1,500 towards their costs. Jack has currently raised £270 while Rosina has managed £620.

    Recommendation: £150 each

Lydia Cole, Lyndhurst

    Between July and September this year, Lydia will take part in the Kenya Project Partnership (KPP) Secondary School Resource Investment Programme to improve secondary school education in the rural southern region of Kamuli in Kenya. The project is to develop better facilities within schools and the surrounding communities in order to promote self-led growth. Each participant is being asked to contribute £2,000 towards their costs and it is hoped that this along with other money raised will allow £1,500 to be invested on each school within Kamuli.

    KPP is a charity run by volunteers from both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Lydia is in her final year at Cambridge University studying Natural Sciences.

    Recommendation: £150

Georgina Veater, Hedge End and Maria Tubbs, Chineham

    Georgina and Maria are both young leaders with 1st Hedge End Guides and Chineham Rainbow Guides respectively and have been successful in gaining a place on a Guide Camp being held in Japan in August. The Camp is to last for eleven days and will bring guides together from all over the world to discuss cultural issues and take part in various group activities. Each participant needs to raise £1,200 towards their costs.

    Recommendation: £150 each
