UK Youth Parliament October 05 - January 06
In October five MYPs observed a County Council Cabinet meeting and presented at an informal cabinet meeting in January. As a result of this meeting Councillors were keen to hear more from young people and arranged to attend the January HCYC meeting.
Three MYPs also went on the Poland residential (as detailed in the HCYC report).
The MYP and Deputy for Winchester and Eastleigh have met with MP Mark Oaten to discuss a number of issues they would like him to tackle including lighting and bins. The MYP has been heavily involved with the Lords on tackling the euthanasia bill.
These MYPs have also been trained in awarding the CAT mark and have visited a Children's home in the New Forest.
The MYP for Basingstoke and Test Valley North has been invited to work closely with the Anvil Concert Hall in order to make their programme more young people friendly.
She has also organised a meeting with various transport agencies in the area so that they can address the needs of young people.
The deputy is working closely with Sir George Young and others in organising a democracy dinner for young people.
The Deputy MYP for Fareham and Gosport has approached schools in the area to support more pupil run school councils. She has also been leading the anti-bullying workshop at HCYC.
The MYP for Hart and Rushmoor raised over 700 signatures for a transport petition and was therefore chosen to go to 10, Downing Street to hand it in on behalf of the UKYP!
She has also focused on improving the local youth council and has been enormously successful.
The elections for the new members for Hampshire took place in November with 21 schools, 1 college and 53 youth projects taking part. A total of 8,944 votes were cast (this is an increase of 63%) and 28 candidates stood.
The new members will be attending a handover meeting with the outgoing MYPs on January 24th.
